As a former smoker who successfully quit, I’d like to offer you some tips on stopping smoking.
1. Use the tools science has developed to replace nicotine. There are two battles to be fought when you want to stop smoking. One is mental and the other is physical. Your body needs the nicotine. Don’t struggle against this need alone. You can get help in the form of patches, pills, gum, and injections.
2. Understand there is a mental side to the addiction. Too often, people underestimate the mental side of the addiction to cigarettes. That’s why patches and pills alone don’t always work. Think about how involved your body is in smoking. You hold the cigarette in your hands. You taste the cigarette. You blow the smoke rings. None of these things have anything to do with a nicotine addiction. They have to do with the mental aspect of smoking. That’s why treatments such as hypnotherapy and acupuncture can be so effective in helping you quit smoking: the work with your addiction at the mental level.
3. Change your environment. There are so many things you can do to change your environment. One of the tips on stopping smoking that I think is most important is to use these “soft” changes in your diet, taking supplements, using aromatherapy and more to effect the change you want.
4. Stay on top of new treatments. Science is truly amazing. There are enormous resources being pumped into smoking cessation technologies. One of the newer ideas is laser treatment to stop smoking. Take advantage of the new treatments.
5. Never give up. Most people try to quit 9 times before they are successful. Falling off the cigarette wagon is devastating because it reactivates the nicotine addiction. But you must try again, because the benefits to quitting smoking are so great.
